| WHAT: |
The 2005 International Gairdner Symposium: Celebrating excellence in medical research. The symposium, featuring two distinguished winners of the Gairdner Foundation International Awards, is one of the most prestigious honours for scientific discovery. Over the past 48 years, 64 of the 274 Gairdner winners have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. |
| SPEAKERS: |
Dr. Jeffrey M. Friedman Investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor, The Rockefeller University, New York, NY
Why are we obese? Dr. Jeffrey Friedman is the co-recipient of the 2005 Gairdner Award for his contributions to our understanding of obesity and particularly for the discovery of the adipose tissue hormone, leptin. Dr. Friedman has dedicated his career to unraveling the molecular mechanisms that regulate body weight. By studying leptin and continuing to search for other genes that influence weight in humans, Dr. Friedman hopes to lay the foundation for developing therapies to combat obesity. |

Dr. Tony Pawson Director of Research, Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute Mount Sinai Hospital, Toronto, ON
Mixed signals: the cause of disease A Gairdner Award recipient in 1994, world-renowned signal-transduction researcher, Dr. Tony Pawson has spent 25 years studying how cells grow and communicate with each other. He has explored the mechanisms through which cell surface receptors control intracellular signaling pathways, and the organization of cell regulatory systems. Dr. Pawson's discoveries contribute to every aspect of biomedical research including immunology and cancer research. |
