11/17: Reaching out to Chinese cancer patients and their supporters

For the first time, BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum offers education session in Cantonese
When a loved one has cancer, family and friends become partners on a journey through care, treatment and recovery. On Saturday, November 25, cancer patients and their supporters are invited to learn how to better navigate this journey at the third annual BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum, held at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina.

New to the forum is Cancer 101 for the Chinese Community – an education session delivered in Cantonese that will address the needs and barriers faced by Chinese patients and their caregivers.
“The BC Cancer Agency is a world-class facility covering the entire spectrum of cancer care for patients and their families,” said George Abbott, Minister of Health. “This session will provide important information to patients and their families.”

“Chinese patients and their families are eager to be educated about cancer but often don’t know where to access the information, or face language barriers in obtaining it,” says Sandy Kwong, Social Worker at the BC Cancer Agency. “This session was planned specifically to answer the many questions and concerns that cross their minds.”

Led by Dr. Roy Ma, Radiation Oncologist at the BC Cancer Agency and Sandy Kwong, the session will cover topics ranging from cancer prevention and early detection to support services and communication.
Cancer 101 for the Chinese Community is just one of several unique sessions included the BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum. The forum also brings together experts in the oncology field to provide up-to-date information on the following topics:

  • Engaging spirituality on the cancer journey
  • Decision-making about complementary therapies
  • Four ways to nurture your spiritual life: An experiential workshop
  • The latest in cancer treatment: Participating in clinical trials
  • Cancer friendly foods: Living better through nutrition and cooking

The BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum, sponsored by the Provincial Health Services Authority, is free and registration is not required. It is being held at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina, 1601 Bayshore Drive, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday November 25.
