11/22: Coping with Cancer
Join experts at the BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum to get the information you need
When a loved one has cancer, family and friends become partners on a journey through care, treatment and recovery. On Saturday, November 25, cancer patients and their supporters are invited to learn how to better navigate this journey at the third annual BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum, held at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina.
The BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum, sponsored by the Provincial Health Services Authority, will bring together experts in the oncology field to address the many issues and concerns that affect cancer patients, and their family and friends.
“The BC Cancer Agency is a world-class facility covering the entire spectrum of cancer care for patients,” said George Abbott, Minister of Health. “This session will provide important information to patients and their families. “
Having lost her father to cancer and watched her sister triumph over the disease, Lynda Larouche, executive chef at the Watermark Restaurant on Kits beach, knows first hand the challenges and questions a family faces when hit with cancer.
Larouche joins this year’s line-up at the forum, teaming up with a BC Cancer Agency registered dietitian, Angela Bowman, to deliver an interactive cooking class and lecture on cancer friendly foods. They will demonstrate nutritious and simple recipes suitable for cancer patients undergoing treatment, survivors who want to prevent recurrence, and their families.
“I understand that day-to-day activities, including preparing meals, can become very stressful when coping with cancer,” says Larouche. “At this session, we want to demonstrate that food can be fun, nutritious and delicious for the entire family, even during a very difficult time.”
The interactive nutrition class is just one of several unique sessions included the BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum. Other sessions at this free public forum include:
- Engaging spirituality on the cancer journey
- Decision-making about complementary therapies
- Four ways to nurture your spiritual life: An experiential workshop
- Cancer 101 for the Chinese Community (in Cantonese)
- The latest in cancer treatment: Participating in clinical trials
- A survivor’s story: Life after the cancer journey
The BC Cancer Agency’s Community Cancer Forum is free and registration is not required. It will be held at the Westin Bayshore Resort & Marina, 1601 Bayshore Drive, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday November 25.
