05/11: Recent Screening Mammography Program Mailout

Due to a problem with an automatic letter stuffing machine, two separate screening results were erroneously sent to a number of participants of the Screening Mammography Program of B.C. on Friday, April 28th. The report is of a screening test and does not contain any information on cancer or any other disease. Both the BC Cancer Agency and Provincial Health Services Authority would like to assure women that immediate steps were taken prevent this from happening again and to ensure privacy and confidentiality are maintained.

The agency and authority take this situation very seriously, and we sincerely apologize for this incident and any undue distress it may have caused. The Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner has been notified of this incident and we will continue to work closely with the commissioner’s office and ensure any recommendations are put in place.

Letters have been sent to all women affected by this incident and a notification has also been sent to their physicians. Any woman affected will have received a letter, and women who did not receive their report as they should, have been sent a new report.

Women who received results that are not their own have been asked to return the report to the SMPBC as soon as possible. A pre-paid envelope has been provided with the notification.

The Screening Mammography Program would like to assure women that this incident should not deter them from attending their regular screening mammogram.

We appreciate your understanding. If you have questions, please call the SMPBC Central Office at 604-660-3923 or 1-800-663-9203, or by email at Smp-bc@bccancer.bc.ca.
