09/19: BC Cancer Agency Community Care Award open to nominations

Recognizing community partners who make a difference in the lives of cancer patients

It was the end of a typical yet busy day for Janice MacDonald, a patient care coordinator at the Kamloops Cancer Clinic. Any fatigue or family plans Janice had were outweighed by the cancer patient who needed her – the one living 120 kilometers outside of Kamloops who needed an injection. She made the long drive after work to ensure that the patient received care.

MacDonald exemplifies the type of person who devotes time and energy to caring for those with cancer. We find these individuals in every corner of the province and, in many cases they do it simply because they care.

Last year, MacDonald was presented with the first BC Cancer Agency Community Care Award, and nominations are now open for the 2008 award, sponsored by the BC Cancer Foundation. The BC Cancer Agency recognizes the enormous effort and spirit of our partners in the community, and invites the public to nominate those people who go above and beyond in providing support to cancer patients.

"I was extremely honoured to be recognized for the work I do," says MacDonald. "But there are numerous exceptional people who deserve recognition for their passion and contribution to cancer care. This award is an important initiative that recognizes the work done in the community and I encourage people to take this opportunity to nominate caregivers who exemplify these qualities."

“As an organization providing care through networks across British Columbia, the BC Cancer Agency wants to pay tribute to the valuable contributions our community partners make,” explains Dr. Ursula Lee, BC Cancer Agency Fraser Valley Centre oncologist. “Every day we hear stories about the many individuals who go far beyond the call of duty to help improve the lives of those living with cancer. This award will acknowledge the amazing caregivers in our communities.”

Any community caregiver in B.C. is eligible for the award, for example, nurses, volunteers, physiotherapists, hospice workers, family doctors, or surgeons, to name a few. Nominations for the BC Cancer Agency Community Care Award are being accepted from anywhere in B.C. Please note that BC Cancer Agency staff are not eligible for the award.

"The fight against cancer depends on so many factors that are not strictly clinical. The feeling that someone is on your side, cheering you on, offering strength, time and emotional support that's beyond the duties of their job is comforting and invaluable,” says Dr. Rhonda Low, physician, CTV medical commentator, and a member of the selection committee for the award. “It’s these special individuals who've made huge differences in my patients' lives and they deserve to be recognized and thanked for their dedication to providing quality care to their patients and families."

One nominee will be chosen to receive the award by a panel of caregivers, community supporters, and patients. The award recipient will be announced on November 30 at the BC Cancer Agency’s annual award banquet in Vancouver. Travel and accommodation will be provided. Nominations can be made by filling out the nomination form online, or by calling 604.877.6000 ex 4813, or toll free at 1.800.663.3333, ex 4813. The deadline for nominations is October 19, 2007.

The BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing the mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer.
