06/12: June 14th – Public Tour: Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre

Abbotsford – Residents of the eastern Fraser Valley are getting a sneak preview of the new Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre (ARHCC), on a public tour Saturday, June 14th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

“Fraser Health and the BC Cancer Agency are offering Fraser Valley residents a very exciting opportunity to see for themselves the new facility that they have been waiting more than 20 years to be built,” said Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Mike de Jong, MLA for Abbotsford-Mount Lehman.

The tour will give residents a sense of the expanded health care services that will be available regionally as they take a look inside the 60,000 square metre hospital and cancer centre at 32900 Marshall Road, Abbotsford.

“The Fraser Valley is one of the fastest growing regions in the country and this new, 300-bed regional facility will help meet our growing health-care needs,” added Minister of Public Safety and Solicitor General John van Dongen, MLA for Abbotsford-Clayburn.

Based on the more than 2,200 health care professionals and family members who toured the facility during a special staff tour on May 24, the June 14 tour for the public is expected to draw a tremendous crowd from the 300,000 plus residents from Abbotsford to Hope who will be served by the regional hospital and cancer centre.

“Our staff helped design the new building and are gearing up for opening day. We are thrilled at the opportunity to share this world-class facility with the public on June 14,” said Vivian Giglio, Fraser Health’s Executive Director of Acute Programs at the Abbotsford Regional Hospital.

“The new BC Cancer Agency Abbotsford Centre will be of enormous value to residents of this region, offering patients the opportunity to receive a spectrum of world-class cancer care closer to home,” said Dr. Simon Sutcliffe, President of the BC Cancer Agency, “We encourage the public to join us on June 14 to see our new centre and to take part in our excitement.”

The 90 minute tour includes:

  • Radiation treatment area
  • Chemotherapy area
  • Operating rooms
  • Special care nursery
  • Pediatrics
  • Maternity
  • Patient rooms
  • CT scanner
  • Emergency department

Patients will move into the new, state-of-the-art health care facility from MSA Hospital on Sunday, August 24. Outpatient services, including cancer care at the BC Cancer Agency, will be available on Monday, August 25.
