10/02: BC Cancer Agency’s Community Care Award open to nominations

Recognizing community partners who make a difference in the lives of cancer patients

For Campbell River oncology nurse Geri Arkell, her commitment to caring for cancer patients does not stop when she leaves the clinic. Even off-duty, she often visits patient homes to help solve problems with chemotherapy pumps, make house calls to those who were too ill to come in for follow-up care after chemotherapy, and buy flowers to brighten up a patient’s day.

Last year, Arkell was presented with the BC Cancer Agency’s Community Care Award, and nominations are now open for the 2008 award, sponsored by the BC Cancer Foundation. The BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, recognizes the enormous effort and spirit of our partners in the community, and invites the public to nominate those people who go above and beyond in providing support to cancer patients. The deadline for nominations is October 15, 2008.

Being presented with the BC Cancer Agency’s Community Care Award was an incredible experience and honour, says Arkell, and she encourages British Columbians to nominate exceptional caregivers found in every corner of the province.

“This type of award is so important because it honours the regular Joes that make such a difference in the lives of cancer patients. It’s important for all of us to look around to see the shining stars in our own community and nominate them.”

“As an organization providing care through networks across British Columbia, the BC Cancer Agency wants to pay tribute to the valuable contributions our community partners make,” says Dr. Ursula Lee, BC Cancer Agency Fraser Valley Centre oncologist. “Every day we hear stories about the many people who go far beyond the call of duty to help improve the lives of people living with cancer. This award will acknowledge these invaluable caregivers in our communities.”

One nominee will be chosen to receive the award by a panel of caregivers, community supporters, and patients. The award will be presented on November 21 in Vancouver. Travel and accommodation will be provided. Nominations can be made by filling out the nomination form online at www.bccancer.bc.ca, or by calling 604.877.6000 ex 6216, or toll free at 1.800.663.3333, ex 6216.

The BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer. It provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia by working with community partners to deliver a range of oncology services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care. The BC Cancer Foundation raises funds to support research and enhancements to patient care at the BC Cancer Agency.
