09/24: LACE Campaign ramps up for Pap Awareness Week: Oct 24 to 30
The LACE Campaign and the BC Cancer Agency’s Cervical Cancer Screening Program want all women in British Columbia to know that there are lots of good reasons to have a Pap test. With Pap Awareness Week (PAW) rapidly approaching, it will be easier than ever to get screened. During the last week of October, participating clinics all over B.C. will offer drop-in times for women who are due for their Pap tests.
“Getting a regular Pap test is one of the most important things you can do to protect yourself against cervical cancer,” says Minister of Healthy Living and Sport, Ida Chong. “They only take a few minutes and can help save your life.”
PAW is the chance for women of all ages who are due for a Pap to take control of their health. Says LACE Campaign Outreach Coordinator Lizzy Karp, “We are so excited to be promoting this campaign. A Pap test is such an effective prevention tool, it really does save lives, takes almost no time, and is really not that bad, especially if you can do it during Pap Awareness Week when you can feel like you are part of a women’s health movement!”
Karp emphasizes, “It’s easy to get involved. Everyone can help us build the buzz to let women know about this opportunity to get their Paps. Whether it reminds them to make an appointment or take advantage of the drop-in – we need to get women to act. We need posters and postcards distributed in communities wherever clinics are participating. And of course, we’re spreading the word on Facebook and Twitter too! However you do it, we need for you to tell women about PAW! It’s fun, and you’d be doing something important.”
To sign up a clinic to participate in PAW, get involved as a volunteer, or to learn more about PAW & LACE, visit www.LACEcampaign.com. The website is full of resources including videos, lists of clinics and links to Facebook and Twitter feeds.
There’s also a contest inspired by July’s ad contest winner Lee-Anne Deneault representing the Q’wemtsin Health Society in Kamloops. Lee-Anne created our Pap Awareness Week poster theme, depicting women's reasons to get a Pap. Our current contest continues the theme: “There are lots of reasons to get your Pap! Tell us yours."
