11/04: Smithers cancer clinic enhancements celebrated
Patients in the Bulkley Valley will benefit from enhanced community cancer services at Bulkley Valley District Hospital thanks to the completion of renovations to the hospital’s cancer clinic, Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad announced today.
"The Northern Cancer Control Strategy is focused on reducing the impact of cancer in the North,” said John Rustad, Nechako Lakes MLA. “These recently completed enhancements will help to improve care and support for cancer patients and families living in Smithers and surrounding areas.”
The $182,000 renovations began in May and were funded through the Northern Cancer Control Strategy.
“Our dedicated cancer care team invested a lot of their time and effort into the renovations for this new clinic, including input into design, décor, and color scheme,” said Cormac Hikisch, health services administrator. “They were very focused on ensuring that the new clinic would provide a warm and caring environment for their patients.”
“We would like to thank our contractor and local subcontractors as well for their hard work, and for making it possible to include air conditioning for the new clinic as a late addition for the project,” added Hikisch.
The expanded clinic is now in a separate area from other clinical spaces in the hospital, offering patients more privacy during their visits. The renovations also included a glass entrance way for the new oncology area.
“Through the Northern Cancer Control Strategy, we are working to improve cancer services across the North,” said Dr. Ronald Chapman, Executive Director for the strategy. “This expanded clinic is an important part of an integrated system of cancer care in Northern B.C. which is focused not only on treatment, but also prevention, early detection, and patient support.”
The $106 million Northern Cancer Control Strategy is a joint partnership between Northern Health, BC Cancer Agency and the Provincial Health Services Authority. It is focused on enhancing the continuum of cancer services in the North, including prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment, and supportive and palliative care.
