Lymphoid Cancer Education Forum
Patients, families and their supporters are invited to learn more about the latest in research and care for Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma, Hodgkin Lymphoma, Multiple Myeloma, and Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL).
This forum will feature guest speaker, Dr. Wendy Harpham, doctor of internal medicine, long-term lymphoma survivor and best-selling author of Happiness in a Storm: Embracing Life after Cancer.

Brain Tumour Information Day Conference
Presentations by oncologists and other health care specialists. Topics include: surgery and brain function; advances in radiation therapy; living cognitive impairment; living with seizures, fatigure and other symptoms, and complementary therapies. The day also provides an opportunity to network and learn about support groups. For a full schedule of day's activities, please see program poster.

Upcoming Children's Club
A support group program with art activities to help school-aged children 5 -12 years old who have a parent or family member living with cancer. Concurrent session for parents.

Cancer Transitions
An education program geared to the needs of cancer patients who have completed active treatment and are trying to “get back to normal”.
The six week program includes:
- exercise,
- guest lectures
- group discussion on topics relevant to cancer survivors including: dealing with fears, addressing health issues, nutrition, getting into—or back into—exercise, and generally moving forward in all aspects of life.

Empower
A new program designed to help family members and support persons of cancer survivors make the transition from active treatment to post-treatment life.
The Program will provide support, information and tools to help participants with their own coping and self-care along with being better able to understand and help their loved one in dealing with post-treatment life.

This forum brings together SMPBC staff from across the province to focus on our common goal - to provide quality screening mammography to women. This free public forum will bring together experts to provide information on various topics.
In the morning, there will be a nutrition-focused cooking demonstration. In the afternoon, presentations will be given on the HPV vaccine, cervical cancer screening, helping a loved one cope with cancer, survivorship, and transitioning for patients after treatment ends. Participants can also visit displays from the BC Cancer Agency and its community partners.

7th National Community Cancer Care Summit

We are looking forward to hearing our keynote speaker, Dr. Lobchuk. As well, presentations throughout the day will profile projects being conducted by local researchers from the University of Victoria, as well as VIHA and the BC Cancer Agency."
Keynote Speaker: Dr. Michelle Lobchuk (RN, PhD) Assistant Professor and Canadian Cancer Society Research Scientist, Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba. Dr. Lobchuk will speak about the research she has completed with lung cancer patients and their partners or caregivers on the emotional impact of a lung cancer diagnosis.

Waits in Health Care: Improving Access to Quality Cancer Care in BC

Details: A team of researchers from UBC and the BC Cancer Agency is using sophisticated mathematical and computer models to understand waits, capacity and other processes in the delivery of cancer care, with the goal of providing better access to care.
Members of the team will present some of their projects, such as reducing patient wait times in ambulatory clinics, determining the amount of resources necessary to provide timely cancer care to the BC population, and a different type of wait: deciding the best time to start prostate cancer treatment.
Even if you struggle with basic arithmetic, you’ll be able to see how this kind of research contributes to the overall quality of care our health care system provides!
Light refreshments will be served after the event and you will have the opportunity to talk with the researchers about their projects.

Details: Skills for Wellness: One-Day Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Workshop geared to health care professionals.
To be effective helpers over the long term, it’s vital that we take time to apply stress management skills and self care strategies to our professional and personal lives. This workshop will combine experiential learning with small group discussions and didactic presentations to address the causes and solutions to stress at work and in life. The day will begin at 9:30 AM and end at 4:30 pm with the group staying together to enjoy the lunch break as a community.
The workshop will be led by Dr. Rob Rutledge, Radiation Oncologist at Nova Scotia Cancer Centre. Dr. Rutledge is a dynamic and engaging speaker who speaks with passion about the need for holistic approaches to healthcare. Rob is well known within the cancer care community for his facilitation of workshops for health professionals as well as for leading Skills for Healing retreats for cancer patients.
$50.00 Lunch will be included. Please bring a yoga mat or blanket and wear comfortable (loose-fitting) clothing. |

Weekend Retreat: Skills for Healing
| When: The program begins with registration on Friday March 14th (4:45 - 5:30pm) and runs from 5:30-8:30 pm, 9am - 4:15pm on Saturday and 9am - 3:15pm on Sunday |
| Where: The retreat and all meals (lunches and breaks) will be held at The Coast Victoria Harbourside Hotel & Marina. The address is 146 Kingston Street. Free underground parking is available to participants. |
| Main Audience: This retreat is open to all people who have had a diagnosis of cancer, and their accompanying family members or caregivers residing on Vancouver Island. Participants MUST be willing to commit to the entire weekend. |

Details: Many people who are diagnosed with cancer experience feelings of anxiety, fear and helplessness at some point in their journey. We know that getting and giving support to others who are going through similar experiences can be very helpful in reducing the isolation that cancer patients and their family members often feel. This weekend retreat is a chance to connect with others and to learn skills for coping, healing and living life to the fullest!
The retreat will be offered to a group of about 55 cancer patients and their accompanying family members. You can expect to hear presentations on cancer, its treatment, available resources, ways to reduce stress and principles of mindfulness. The schedule will include experiential exercises including meditation, art therapy and gentle yoga. Small group discussions throughout the weekend will be facilitated by volunteers, allowing people to share and reflect on their experiences in a safe and supportive environment.
Dr. Rob Rutledge, a Radiation Oncologist at the Nova Scotia Cancer Centre, has been facilitating retreats across Canada for several years now, to very positive response. For more information, go to http://www.robrutledge.ca/. Tim Walker, Ph.D. is a psychotherapist who runs a mindfulness-based stress reduction clinic in Halifax.
We recommend wearing comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Bring a yoga mat (clearly marked with your name) OR a blanket for light yoga exercises; an open heart; and a listening ear! |

A National Forum on Cancer Care for All Canadians: Improving Access & Minimizing Disparities

Annual Screening Mammography Forum

Upon completion of this conference, the participant will be able to:
- identify impact of screening mammography on breast cancer mortality in British Columbia;
- retrospectively determine the feasibility of creating a true screening environment for blind review of interval breast cancers, and to compare the proportion classified as false negative to the standard informed “blind” review;
- define the “risk tissue” in the breast in context of the Sick lobe hypothesis;
- discuss the issue of natural history of low-grade DCIS;
- review organization and hanging protocols of batch reading in digital mammography with soft-copy reading;
- give an overview of the trials comparing screenfilm mammography & full-field digital mammography in screening;
- become familiar with the results of the Digital Mammography Imaging Screening Trial (DMIST);
- understand the key technical factors underlying image quality and radiation doses in digital mammography;
- learn how the platform of digital mammography can be extended to provide potentially valuable new information from breast images;
- weigh the benefits versus risks for women at various ages;
- learn of the relationship between mammographic density and breast cancer risk and what it tells us about breast cancer etiology; and
- describe the categories of mammographic findings.
