10.4 Staging

 Updated 2 May 2011

Staging Diagram and Classification Criteria (TNM)

Unfortunately due to the non-specificity of symptoms, most patients present with advanced gallbladder cancer. Only 10-30% of patients are actually eligible for surgical resection.

The five year survival rates are:

  • Tis disease - 60 percent
  • T1 N0 - 39 percent
  • T2 N0 – 15 percent
  • T3 N0 or any node-positive disease - 5 percent

A few studies published in the past decade suggest that outcomes have improved due to more aggressive surgery. However, these series are from single institutions where the clinical experience is greater than average.
