The Hereditary Cancer Program provides services to individuals, families and health professionals in British Columbia and the Yukon.
Hereditary Cancer Program Goals
- to reduce cancer morbidity and mortality in individuals at risk for hereditary cancer by identifying such individuals before malignancy develops and providing a comprehensive program for cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment
- to enhance the quality of life for individuals and families at risk for hereditary cancers
- to increase the effectiveness of genetic testing by focusing its use on those individuals and families for whom it is most likely to be informative
- to reduce the utilization of unnecessary medical procedures and the attendant anxiety (such as intensive screening, testing, and surgery) by accurately identifying mutation carriers and non-carriers within families
- to assure that hereditary cancer services are available to individuals and families throughout the province on a consistent and equitable basis
Recent Education Event
The Hereditary Cancer Program was pleased to present our first Lynch Syndrome Awareness and Education Day on June 12, 2010. This event was intended for physicians and other health care professionals with an interest in Lynch syndrome (HNPCC, hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer), and for people who are living with Lynch syndrome in their families.
