Policy Statement

Updated: 28 July 2005

The objective of the Tumour Marker Lab (TML) is to provide the best possible province-wide tumour marker service. In keeping with this, we have developed a number of services unique to the laboratory described in detail (see menu on the left-hand side).

As an example, in 1986 we developed a computer system capable of following all tumour marker assay results. Using this data system we will have on hand a permanent record of each patient's history and assay results reported by us. A patient does not need to be registered with the Cancer Agency for this service. Our results, graphs and oncologist's comments are available to all physicians in British Columbia.

While these assays have a variety of potential applications, in general, they are most valuable for patient monitoring and not applicable for diagnostic screening.
