• Set priorities for the Council and Network.
• Establish networks to facilitate the integration of community surgeons into the cancer treatment system.
• Perform annual performance review of the Council and Network.
• Provide and disseminate information about surgical oncology activities in a timely manner to surgeons, surgical oncologists and the Health Regions through the website, videoconferencing and newsletter.
• Liaise with the Ministry of Health (including the provision of regular reports).
• Appoint Surgical Oncology Tumour Group chairs and recommend surgeons for membership on BCCA Tumour Groups.
• Establish and oversee SON Council committees including the appointment of committee chairs.
• Liaise with Health Authorities.

On January 26, 2007, the Network held its 2006 Annual Council Meeting at the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel. This year marked the fifth year since the Network was established and it marked the final year for founding Co-chair, Dr. Con Rusnak. Dr. Rusnak was honoured with a presentation by Dr. Simon Sutcliffe, President, BC Cancer Agency at the annual meeting. The Network has greatly benefited from Dr. Rusnak's contribution and vision over the years. We are fortunate to have his continued input as we transition into 2007.

The objectives at the annual meeting were to:

• Review the 2006 activities of the Network and provide an update to Council. Co-chairs Dr. Con Rusnak and Dr. Noelle Davis gave a presentation on the work of the past year.

• Review the challenges and successes of Surgical Tumour Groups. Presentations were given by the Surgical Tumour Group Chairs:
• Dr. Allen Hayashi - Breast
• Dr. Gregor McGregor - Proximal GI
• Dr. Terry Phang - Colorectal
• Dr. Charles Scudamore - Hepatobiliary
• Dr. Frank Wong - Head & Neck

• Receive an update on the Provincial Surgical Services Project. A presentation on the Provincial Surgical Patient Registry and Clinical Assessment Tools for Surgical Prioritization was given by Judy Delaney, Implementation Manager, Provincial Surgical Services Project, PHSA.
• Review how the Research and Outcomes Evaluation Committee can support research, data collection and outcomes reporting. Colleen McGahan, Network Statistician and Coordinator of ROE Committee, gave a presentation on the type of research support and database development that can be provided through the Committee.
• To discuss future directions and the Network structure. An open discussion was held during the afternoon.
