Unconventional Cancer Therapies
3rd Edition and 4th Edition
4th Edition edited by Saira Mithani, PharmD, and Beth Morrison, MLS.
We are currently in transition between the 3rd edition (2000), and the 4th edition (2007). Each monograph will clearly reflect its edition number and year of revision and/or publication.
Scope
This manual is designed to provide objective information for patients and their families, relating to alternative and complementary therapies. Most of the information consists of direct quotations from the medical, peer-reviewed book and journal literature. Also included under each therapy is a "Summary" statement, which tends to best summarize the opinion given in the evidence-based literature. Additional sections within each monograph provide information about the "Description" of the therapy, "History", "Proponent/ Advocate Claims" of benefit, "Professional Evaluation/ Critique", "Toxicity/ Risks", "Costs" and "References".
This manual includes only forty-six of the many hundreds of unconventional cancer therapies available. Our intent is to include the therapies that are most frequently asked about at the BC Cancer Agency Library/ Cancer Information Centre.
Readability
The format of this manual offers quotations from both proponent claims of benefit, as well as evaluative information quoted directly from the peer-reviewed medical literature. It is hoped cancer patients will consult their oncologist and family physician for interpretation and support.
