UBC BCCA Research Ethics Board (UBC BCCA REB)

SUBMISSION INFO

What's New?
Important notices and updates (current and past) are posted under  What's New?
It is useful to check these postings when returning from an extended absence.

The BC Cancer Agency is a UBC affiliated REB.  The BCCA REB reviews both clinical and behavioural adult oncology related research projects conducted at the BC Cancer Agency.  On July 9, 2004 ongoing BCCA clinical research projects approved by the UBC Clinical Research Ethics Board (UBC CREB) were transferred to the BCCA REB which became the ethics board of record for these studies.

New Applications
Researchers at the BC Cancer Agency should submit their new "Clinical" projects to the BCCA REB and "Behavioural" projects may be submitted to either the BCCA REB or the UBC Behavioural REB.

The following FAQ's may also help you to identify whether your project requires ethics approval and whether it should be submitted to the BCCA REB;
Does my project require REB approval?

Who can submit an application to the BCCA REB?

See New Applications for a full list of requirements for new applications.

Post Approval Activities (PAAs)
Post approval activities such as amendments, renewals, requests for acknowledgment and adverse event reporting should be submitted to the REB which initially approved the project.  For a list of requirements see: Amendments, Annual Renewals, Acknowledgments, Adverse Events

Fees for Ethical Review

There are three BCCA REB Fees; a fee for ethical review of projects that are sponsored by for-profit agencies and a separate additional fee for review of Serious Adverse Event (SAE) reports for these projects.

Clinical Trial Agreement (legal contract) for research project
Where applicable, the BCCA REB requires submission of a project's signed legal contract.
See
Clinical Trials Agreement (CTA)

Deadlines & Meeting Schedule
BCCA REB full board meetings are held once per month.  These may be subject to change.
Please refer to the full board meeting schedule for each new submission.

Forms:   Researcher Information Services (RISe)
Effective April 3, 2006 all submissions and departmental approval of applications to the BCCA REB must be submitted by using the all electronic internet based Researcher Information Services (RISe) system.
The only exception is the reporting of
Adverse or Serious Adverse Events.

See our RISe web page for information about the RISe system and how to apply for access.

Guidelines/Policies
The UBC BCCA REB as one of the 6 UBC affiliated REBs has agreed to keep research oversight processes as consistent as possible.  Guidelines and policies often default to the UBC Clincal REB (CREB) or the UBC Behavioural REB (BREB) below, however, some requirements may vary slightly at the UBC BCCA REB.  Guidelines are posted within the electronic RISe application and BC Cancer Agency researchers may also need to refer to guidelines/policies specific to the BCCA REB some of which are posted on this website under the "Policies" or may be explained in our Frequently Asked Question "FAQ" webpage (links are below).  Guidelines are frequently updated and it is therefore recommended that they be referred to with each new application as well as each submission of amendments, annual Renewals, acknowledgments, and adverse events.

Annual Reports
The BCCA REB produces an annual report for each fiscal year (April 1 - March 31).
