SRC Research Staff

Richard Doll, MSW, MSc
Co-Director Cancer Survivorship Research Centre

Richard Doll is, Co- Director, Survivorship Research Centre, Provincial Leader Cancer Survivorship, BC Cancer Agency, and Adjunct Professor in the School of Population and Public Health at the University of BC and Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University.

Richard is the nominated Principal Investigator for two national teams funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR); a New Emerging Team (NET) in Palliative Care (2004-2012) and The CIHR Supportive Care Team in Cancer (2007-2013). Richard leads the “Patient and Family” research team as part of the Canadian Centre for Applied Research in Cancer Control, funded by the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute (CCSRI). Richard co-leads the Canadian Cancer Survivorship Research Consortium which is comprised of eleven leading research institutions in Canada dedicated to conducting and promoting research and knowledge translation in cancer survivorship. Richard is also co-chair of the Rehabilitation and Survivorship Study Group for the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer.

Joanne Magtoto is
a research coordinator for supportive survivorship programming lead by Amanda Ward; her role includes assistance with supportive program development, research coordination, and evaluation.

Vickie Mattimoe
Administrative Coordinator
Vickie Mattimoe is the Administrative Coordinator for the Cancer Survivorship Research Centre

Vickie oversees daily operational activities of the Survivorship Program including reviewing human resources and financial needs. She reviews bugets for both core and grant funded programs. Vickie works in conjuction with PI's to develop budget information and costs related to grants. She assists the Director of the Survivorship Program in project coordination, administration, project planning and reporting.






Kirsten Smillie, MA.
Research Coordinator
CIHR Team in Supportive Cancer Care

Kirsten Smillie is a Research Coordinator for the CIHR Team in Supportive Cancer Care at the Sociobehavioural Research Centre. Kirsten also coordinates and assists in the development of a program of research in Knowledge Exchange at the School of Population and Public Health at UBC. 

Her research interests include social and cultural understandings of health and illness, as well as the social construction of childhood and identity.

Joanne Stephen, PhD
Joanne Stephen, PhD
Research and Clinical Practitioner

Joanne Stephen is a Research and Clinical Practitioner at the BC Cancer Agency. She brings both clinical experience and doctoral training in Psychology to her role.

Her research interests are psychosocial and cognitive behavioural interventions, translation and uptake of psycho-oncology knowledge in the Cancer Centre and community setting, and complementary and alternative therapies.

She is currently PI on a pilot assessing the clinical utility of therapeutic touch. She is Co-Investigator on projects investigating health technology, patient navigation, and clinical practice guidelines.


James Tanliao, BSc.
Administrative. Research Coordinator
James is the Administrative Coordinator for the Provincial Survivorship Project Working Groups. In this capacity, he provides administrative and research support to research teams that aim to enhance survivors' transition from active treatment to post-treatment life.
James is experienced in behavioural research and is keenly interested in developmental, cognitive, moral, evolutionary and health psychology. He is thrilled to be joining the BC Cancer Agency, a centre where excellence in care and research converge. Here, he can contribute his experiences to improving the well-being of individuals who have been affected by cancer.

Dana Munroe, BSc.
Research Assistant

Dana Munroe is the Research Assistant for the Cancer Survivorship Care Planning in Rural and Remote Northern B.C. Communities project lead by Dr. Amanda Ward.

Research Assistant
Nicole Thomson is a research assistant for supportive survivorship programming lead by Dr. Amanda Ward.

Moira Thejomayen, PhD.,E.M.B.A.
Research Facilitator
Moira Thejomayen is the Research Facilitator for survivorship research and programs at the SRC. She did her PhD at the University of British Columbia in Neuroscience supported by the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship, and recently completed an MBA in Healthcare Mangement at the Saunder School of Bussiness, UBC. Moira was involved in teaching, research, and educational programs management at UBC for the past 15 years and recently joined the SRC.











Amanda Ward, PhD
Research Scientist

Dr. Amanda Ward is a Research Scientist with the Cancer Survivorship Research Centre at the British Columbia Cancer Agency, and an Adjunct Professor with the Department of Medicine’s School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia, Canada.

Amanda has training in both quantitative and qualitative cancer research methodology; with a background that ranges from research at the cellular level to that of the whole person affected by cancer. Amanda currently holds grants from the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer (CPAC) and the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC). The CPAC work focuses on the development, national delivery and research evaluation of educational wellness programming for cancer survivors as they complete active cancer treatment. The PHAC work focuses on the development, delivery and evaluation of Survivorship Care Plans for cancer survivors in rural and remote locations in Canada.
