Dr. Donald YappDr. Yapp is a Research Scientist in the Department of Advanced Therapeutics at the BC Cancer Agency with a cross-appointment as Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UBC.

He obtained his BSc in Chemistry from the University of Victoria (1987) and PhD from the Department of Chemistry at UBC (1993). This was followed by post-doctoral fellowships at Washington University (Dr. Michael J Welch/Carolyn Anderson; PET imaging and radiochemistry), McGill University (Dr. Shirley Lehnert; sustained drug delivery with biodegradable polymers), and The Institute of Health and Community Medicine, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Dr. Jane Cardosa; chemistry support in vaccine development).

Dr. Yapp subsequently spent 5 years at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak where he developed a medicinal chemistry program screening for anti-malarial compounds from native plants in the region before returning to Canada and the BC Cancer Agency.

Dr. Yapp's group is currently interested in understanding how molecular changes in tumours are manifested in their microenvironment, and whether such changes can be monitored non-invasively to guide treatment strategies. Molecular techniques are used in a complementary fashion with non-invasive imaging (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging) to study clinically relevant tumour models from the bottom up and top down. At present, Dr. Yapp's group have programs examining the effects of HER-2 overexpression on physiological functions and response to treatment in aggressive breast cancer tumours and the effects of liposomal drug treatment on the oxygenation and vascularity of colorectal tumours.
