Stephen W. Chung, MD, PhD, FRCSC

Dr. Stephen ChungDr. Chung is a hepatopancreaticobiliary and liver transplant surgeon at the Vancouver General Hospital, a Professor of Surgery at the University of British Columbia, and the Scientific Director of the British Columbia Transplant Society.

He completed his medical school training at the University of Toronto in 1983 and his General Surgery training at the University of British Columbia in 1989. Dr. Chung then obtained his PhD degree from the University of Toronto, which was followed by a clinical fellowship in hepatopancreatobiliary surgery and liver transplantation at the Toronto General Hospital. Following completion of his clinical and research training in 1993, he was appointed to the staff at the Toronto General Hospital.

Dr. Chung returned to Vancouver in 1996. His research and clinical focuses are in the fields of transplantation and hepatopancreatobiliary diseases. Dr. Chung is also the Program Director of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research/Michael Smith Foundation Health Research Training Program in Transplantation and a co-investigator on a Genome Canada program grant studying biomarkers of acute and chronic rejection.
