Karam Takhar, BSc (Hon)

Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of British Columbia

Karam TakharKaram completed a joint honours BSc in molecular biology-biochemistry and business administration at Simon Fraser University in May 2006. He is currently pursuing a PhD from the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Dr. Sylvia Ng and conducts his research in the Department of Advanced Therapeutics at the BC Cancer Agency's Research Centre.

His primary research focus is on elucidating key molecular interactions between pancreatic cancer cells and surrounding stromal cells that are involved in mediating chemoresistance in the former. Through his research efforts, Karam aims to identify novel therapeutic targets and to develop more successful treatment strategies to help improve the overall prognosis of pancreatic cancer. A secondary project he is working on is to investigate the characteristics of a sub-population of pancreatic cancer cells with high 'tumour-initiating' potential known as cancer stem cells.
