Volunteering

Volunteer at work The mandate of BC Cancer Agency Volunteer Services is to enhance the mission of the BC Cancer Agency and the experience of patients, family and friends during their cancer journey. The Vancouver Island Centre has a network of approximately 15 volunteer positions (regular shifts and relief) and 100+ volunteers.

Patient Support Services

Greeters provide support to patients, family members and visitors by providing a beverage cart service and assisting with navigation through the centre. Greeters must be compassionate, out-going individuals with excellent communication skills. (One four hour shift per week or relief.)

Education Volunteers support patients through assisting with education sessions and providing tours. Volunteers are responsible for session set-up and assisting the facilitators in our New Patient Orientation, Pain Teach, Chemo Teach, and Nutrition Groups. Volunteers must be organized, flexible and comfortable speaking to small groups. (Shifts vary.)Greeter

Chemo/ Treatment Room Volunteers offer support and companionship to patients receiving chemotherapy. Volunteers must be able to work both independently and by taking direction from nursing staff. This position requires volunteers who are comfortable interacting with patients and their families in a busy treatment area. (Shifts vary.)

Cancer Site Team Volunteers provide support to patients who are waiting to be seen by their oncologist. Volunteers are available for patients who require companionship and information regarding services. (One three hour shift per week.)

Library Volunteers provide support to staff within the patient information centre, maintaining materials, supporting patients and their families. (One three hour shift per week.)

Relaxation Group Volunteers assist counselling staff with patient support during drop-in relaxation sessions. (One three hour shift per week.)

Trained Therapeutic Touch Clinic Volunteers offer patients therapeutic touch treatments under the supervision of our patient and family counselling staff. Clinics are held twice monthly at the Vancouver Island Centre. (Two four hour shifts per month.)

There's a wonderful atmosphere and it is emotionally supportive (volunteer)

Centre Support Services

Coffee shop volunteersCoffee Shop Volunteers - The Tea L C Café Volunteers work in teams of two providing espresso products, soups and sandwiches to patients and staff. This busy café requires comfort working with a cash register, Food Safe training (provided) and an eye for customer service. (One three hour shift per week or relief.)

Gift Shop Volunteers - The Pebbles Gift Shop provides patients and staff with a lovely environment for their daily shopping needs. Volunteers are required to assist customers with their purchases and work comfortably with a cash register. (One three hour shift per week or relief.)

Salon Volunteers - Salon Revive provides patients with hair replacement services here in the cancer centre. Salon volunteers assist staff with customer inquiries and stock. (Shifts vary.)

Gift shop volunteerOffice Volunteers perform a variety of tasks to support the volunteer program and the Foundation. (Weekly shifts of four hours, or as needed for projects.)

Event Volunteers often support the various events sponsored by the Agency, the BC Cancer Foundation and the regional centre. Opportunities range from providing support during evening information sessions to managing a beverage table at an art show. (No set shifts.)

Committee Volunteers participate in many areas on a regular or ad hoc basis; such as ethics committee and patient advisory committees. (No set shifts.)

I had been wanting to do some volunteer work when I saw the ad in the paper. The interaction with patients is great and the volunteer support is excellent. (volunteer)
