Clinical trials have been conducted at the Vancouver Island Centre since the early 1980s.
The Radiation Therapy Research Business Unit (RTRBU) emerged in March 2006 due to the need for the radiation oncologists to have an avenue to efficiently take advantage of clinical trials involving Research Ethics Board-approved studies using radiation therapy as an intervention. These trials range from large, multi-centre trials to smaller Vancouver Island Centre-driven trials.
From April 2006 to October 2008, a total of 390 patients participated in RTRBU-operated studies.
