Research Initiatives

Published: October 26, 2009

The Vancouver Island Centre (VIC) is an active cancer research centre. As stated in the mission of the BC Cancer Agency, our aim is to reduce the incidence of, and mortality due to, cancer and to improve quality of life through simultaneously providing healthcare and conducting research.

Research activities at the VIC currently range from basic to clinical to patient-centred research. Research activities also reflect a range of maturity, from emerging ideas pursued as new initiatives and areas of developing strengths encapsulated by research themes, to established programs such as cancer immunology research (Deeley Research Centre), clinical trials (Radiation Therapy Research Business Unit and Systemic Therapy Clinical Trials Unit), and the Tumour Tissue Repository.

Important features of our cancer research activities include the coordination of priorities through our centre-wide research advisory committee (VIRAD), the emphasis on translation of new knowledge to practice that can impact patient care at all levels of research, and the systematic development of opportunities for our staff, patients and supporters to be involved in cancer research.
