The Terry Fox Research Institute plans to fund several institutions to generate a pan-Canadian network dedicated to finding tumour characteristics that can predict effects of treatments and likelihood of recurrence.
A pilot grant was obtained by the Vancouver Island Centre to ascertain the ability to obtain primary tumour samples as well as effusions from patients with recurrences undergoing drainage procedures. With these samples, we can prospectively identify characteristics, or biomarkers, that can guide an oncologist’s treatment choices for particular patients.
