Thank you for your interest in joining our volunteer team in Abbotsford.

The mandate of BC Cancer Volunteer Services is to enhance the mission of BC Cancer and the experience of patients, family and friends during their cancer journey.

Whether you have been affected by cancer, have a health care career goal or just want to be involved in your community we welcome your online application. Volunteers are a part of the multi-disciplinary team and play a vital role in the provision of high quality care and support to our patients and their family members.

There are no educational prerequisites but compassionate, empathetic, non-judgmental individuals match our patients’ needs. 

We offer volunteer opportunities Monday to Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. week days. Please note we do not have volunteer opportunities for evenings or weekends.

I had been wanting to do some volunteer work when I saw the ad in the paper. The interaction with patients is great and the volunteer support is excellent. (volunteer)





  • Age 18 years and up
  • Recommend that volunteers be one year post-treatment
  • Suggested guideline that volunteers who have supported a loved one through treatment should apply one year following the end of treatment
  • Available during clinic hours (Mon. - Fri. 8am - 4:30pm)
  • Be available and willing to commit to one regular 3  - 4 hour shift each week for a minimum of six (6) months
  • Completed application, interview and reference checks
  • Successful Applicants will be invited to and must complete a Volunteer Basic Training Course . 

Volunteer Positions






Chemo Teach Volunteer: Offer support to patients attending the Chemo Team session. Assist staff with setup and take down of teaching materials in the meeting room. Lead patients on a tour of BC Cancer – Abbotsford if required. 

Chemo Treatment Room Volunteer: Offer and provide support to patients and their families attending chemotherapy by greeting patients, and offering companionship. Provide support to clinic staff. Must have extensive experience dealing with people and be comfortable initiating conversation with patients undergoing treatment. 



Event Volunteer: Supporting Volunteers Services and it's Patient Support Programs by organizing and managing a seasonal event. 


Greeter Volunteer: Greet and assist new and current patients with navigating the building, on Level 1 Sumas entry or at Level 2 in the General Clinic area.  Provide directional information to assist patients and families, offer conversational support, assist with educational material and providing comfortable friendly environment while waiting in clinic areas.  

Pet Visiting Volunteer: Visit with patients and visitors in the waiting areas throughout the building. Pets and owners must complete the BC Pets & Friends visitation program or St. John's Ambulance Dog Therapy program prior to completing the volunteer application. 

Volunteer Support; Human Resources; Office Assistant: This role involves administrative and human resources related tasks such as word processing and database work, supporting volunteers in orientation to their roles.

  • Make a one year commitment to volunteering
  • Skills required vary depending on volunteer role sought
  • Completion of the screening process which includes online application, interview (telephone and in-person) andreference checks
  • All past patients wishing to volunteer must be one year post active treatment
  • Anyone who has lost an immediate family member or was the principle caregiver to a cancer patient lost to the disease must wait one year before an application will be considered
