Welcome! Thank you for your interest in joining our volunteer team at BC Cancer – Victoria.
Information
Volunteers are a part of the multi-disciplinary cancer care team and play a vital role in providing high-quality care and support; enhancing the experience of patients, family and friends during their cancer journey.

Whether you have been affected by cancer, have a healthcare career goal or just want to be involved in your community, we welcome your application. Volunteer opportunities are available Monday to Friday, 7:00 am and 4:30 pm. Please note, we do not offer volunteer opportunities on weekends or evenings. Requirements

There are no educational prerequisites but compassionate, empathetic, non-judgmental individuals match our patients’ needs. Applicants must meet the following requirements

  • Age 18 years and up
  • Available during clinic hours (Monday to Friday, 7:00 am and 4:30 pm)
  • Willing to commit to one 3-4 hour shift a week for a minimum of 6 months
All applicants must complete the application, interview and reference checks to be considered. Successful applicants will be invited to and must complete a basic training course and orientation.

If you are a BC Cancer patient or have supported a loved one through cancer treatment recently, we recommend waiting one year following the end of treatment to submit an application.

Volunteer positions

Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU)

Meet patients and their support people who have appointments in the Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU). Accompany patients to exam rooms and assist with room preparation, as directed by staff. Offer support and companionship. Click here to apply online.

Café Restocker

Volunteers have a frontline presence and restock café items for patients and staff. One 3.5 hour shift per week. 100% of the net proceeds from the café are given back to BC Cancer – Victoria to assist with various programs and initiatives. Click here to apply online.

Café Shift

Volunteers have a frontline presence and provide baked goods, espresso products, soups and sandwiches to patients and staff. One 3.5 hour shift per week. 100% of the net proceeds from the café are given back to BC Cancer – Victoria to assist with various programs and initiatives. Click here to apply online.

Chemotherapy Room

Meet patients and their support people who have Chemotherapy appointments. Offer support and companionship. Provide support to nursing staff as requested. Click here to apply online.

Gift Shop

Provide patients and staff with a relaxing shopping environment. Assist customers with their purchases and help with merchandise pricing and display. 100% of the net proceeds from the gift shop are given back to BC Cancer – Victoria to assist with various programs and initiatives. Click here to apply online.

Hospitality

Offer hospitality items to patients and their support people via a mobile coffee cart. Maintain complimentary tea in BC Cancer – Victoria waiting areas. Offer support and companionship. Click here to apply online.

New Patient Host

Welcome new patients and their guests to BC Cancer – Victoria. Orient new patients to BC Cancer – Victoria, their appointment and the Care Team. Offer support and companionship. Click here to apply online.

Office Support Volunteer

Assist Volunteer Services Staff in supporting the volunteer program database and providing administrative tasks supporting the café and gift shop. Click here to apply online.

Patient Lay Navigator

Facilitate access for patients, families and the public to information, support and services to address patient/family needs and mitigate barriers to care. Click here to apply online.

Pet Therapy Volunteer

Visit with patients and visitors in the waiting areas throughout the building. Pets and owners must complete the Pacific Animal Therapy Society (PATS) program or the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program prior to volunteering. Click here to apply online.
