Information

The mandate of BC Cancer Agency Volunteer Services is to enhance the mission of the BC Cancer Agency and the experience of patients, family and friends during their cancer journey.

Whether you have been affected by cancer, have a health care career goal or just want to be involved in your community we welcome your online application. Volunteers are a part of the multi-disciplinary team and play a vital role in the provision of high quality care and support to our patients and their family members.

There are no educational prerequisites but compassionate, empathetic, non-judgmental individuals match our patients’ needs. 

We offer volunteer opportunities Monday to Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. week days. Please note we do not have volunteer opportunities for evenings or weekends.

          I had been wanting to do some volunteer work when I saw the ad in the paper. The interaction with patients is great and the volunteer support is excellent. (volunteer)


Requirements

Requirements

  • Age 18 years and up
  • Recommend that volunteers be one year post-treatment
  • Suggested guideline that volunteers who have supported a loved one through treatment should apply one year following the end of treatment
  • Available during clinic hours (Mon. - Fri. 7am - 4:30pm)
  • Be available and willing to commit to one regular 3  - 4 hour shift each week for a minimum of six (6) months
  • Completed application, interview and reference checks
  • Successful Applicants will be invited to and must complete a Volunteer Basic Training Course . 
Volunteer Positions

If you are interested in volunteering in CentreSupport , that is working more indirectly with Patients or in roles that support the Volunteer program , please review the following role descriptions and recruiting information.


Volunteers have a frontline presence and provide baked goods, espresso products, soups and sandwiches to patients and staff. One 3.5 hour shift per week.



 

Provides patients and staff with a relaxing shopping environment. Volunteers assist customers with their purchases and help with merchandise pricing and display.100% of the net proceeds from the Tea L C Café and Pebbles Gift Shop are given back to the Centre to assist with various programs and initiatives.



 
Office:  
Assist Volunteer Services staff with duties that directly or indirectly support the program

Office: Business Support: 
Support the operation of the Volunteer based businesses by verifying cash sheets and deposits, creating new shift floats and entering weekly banking information.  This shift starts no later than 8am and ends when the previous days business sheets have been reconciled ( 1-4 hours)


 

 

If you are interested in volunteering in Patient Support , that is working more directly with Patients , please review the following role descriptions and recruiting information:

New Patient Host:
Welcome new patients and their guests to the Centre
Orient new patients to the centre,their appointment and the Care Team
Offer support and companionship
Chemotherapy Room:
Meet patients and their support people who have Chemotherapy appointments
Offer support and companionship
Provide support to Nursing staff as requested
ACU Clinics:
Meet patients and their support people who have appointments in the Ambulatory Care Unit
Accompany patients to exam rooms and assist with room preparation, as directed by staff
Offer support and companionship
Theraputic Touch:
Assist with session preparation, set up and clean up as directed by staff
Provide therapeutic touch to patients and family members in a clinic setting
Must be certified for therapeutic touch
Must complete Patient and Family Councelling Intake
Lay Navigation:
Facilitate access for patients, families and the public to information, support and services to address patient/family needs and mitigate barriers to care
Offer navigation support to identify and address barriers to care 
Pet Therapy
Pets and owners visit with patients and their support people in the Centres waiting areas
Pets must be certified through PATS (Pacific Animal Therapy Society) prior to starting
Hospitality:
Offer hospitality items to patients and thier support people via a mobile coffee cart
Maintain complimentary tea in Centre waiting areas.  Offer support and companionship
