Next Steps

When a person is referred to the Hereditary Cancer Program (HCP), we send you a detailed Family History form to complete and return.

When we have received and reviewed that form, you will either get a letter informing you that no appointment is needed, or our clerk will phone to book an appointment. Due to our current waiting list, it may be several months before you are contacted.

We provide in-person appointments in Vancouver, Victoria, Surrey, Kelowna, Abbotsford, Prince George, by video conference to most other communities, and sometimes by telephone. The current wait time for an appointment is between 12 and 15 months.

Expedited appointments are offered when a gene mutation has already been identified in a family, or for reasons of medical urgency.

There is a lot of information to cover during a genetic counselling appointment. If you are attending to discuss a family history of breast and/or ovarian cancer, please take the time to view these videos before your appointment as they will help with the appointment and any decisions you may need to make about genetic testing. Please do not complete the course validation at the end of the videos as that is for people attending the Kaiser Permanente hospitals only.

How do I re-connect with the HCP?

If you have had an appointment with a genetic counsellor and want to provide or request an update, please call our office at 604-877-6000 ext. 2198.

A genetic counsellor will be pleased to follow up with you.
