Notifications
​
BC Cancer provides cancer care for British Columbians, including cancer screening programs. Sending screening notices is part of this service.

How will BC Cancer ​​contact me? 

​BC Cancer Screening will contact you by mail. If we need to contact you right away (i.e. to reschedule an appointment), a program representative may call you.

​Wh​​at types of communication will I receive from the cancer screening programs?

BC Cancer mails the following notices to program participants:
  • Invitations for screening when you are age-eligible;
  • Reminders when you are due for your next screening test; and,
  • Screening test results, including follow-up information (if needed).
You can also view select notices online in Health Gateway. Health Gateway can email and/or text (SMS) you when new letters are added that show you need follow-up or when you are due to screen again.​

BC Cancer may also contact you to collect feedback via surveys for the purpose of planning and evaluating its screening programs. 

What do notice​​s from BC Cancer look like? 

Breast Screening: 
  • Reminder Notice Example
    Note: Reminder letters are no longer sent once you turn 75 but you can get a screening mammogram every 1 or 2 years based on your risk. A referral is not required, but we encourage those over 75 to discuss with a health care provider if screening is beneficial for you before booking your mammogram. 
  • Results Notice Example – Normal Result
    Note: As of April 1, 2026, BC Cancer Breast Screening will mail you a letter only if follow-up or action is needed. If your screening results are normal and no follow-up is needed, you will no longer receive a letter in the mail. Instead, you can access your results by signing-up for Health Gateway​, talking to your provider or calling the Breast Screening Client Services Centre (1-800-663-9203).

Can I find my screenin​​g notifications online?

Health Gateway is an easy and secure platform to view your health records (e.g. lab results, immunizations, screening info). Anyone 12 and over in BC can sign-up for an account. You can view BC Cancer Screening notices created on or after your account sign-up date (going back to November 28, 2024).

Can I choose not to receive scree​​ning notices?

Yes. You can opt out of receiving notices for breast, cervix, colon and/or lung screening. To do this, you'll need to: 
  1. Fill out the Notification Opt-Out Form.
  2. Send your request to BC Cancer. 
  3. Wait for it to process (can take up to 30 days). You may still get letters during this time.
Once your request is complete, we will send you a confirmation letter (unless otherwise indicated in Section 2 of the Notification Opt-Out Form).

What will change if I opt out o​​f receiving notices?  

Even if you opt out from receiving notices, you will still have access to the same health care services, including cancer screening services. However, it does mean that you now take full responsibility for the decision to not receive communication from the program(s) designed to support you with cancer screening. 

Including: 
  • You will not receive screening invitations or reminders;
  • You will not receive screening test results; and, 
  • You and your health care provider will be responsible for keeping track of your screening schedule and results. 

Can I choose which letters ​​to opt-out of?

You can choose which specific programs (Breast, Cervix, Colon, and/or Lung Screening) you want to stop receiving letters from. However, you cannot choose the letter types to opt out of (e.g. reminders only or results only). 

Can I opt back i​n later? ​​​

Yes, you can start receiving letters again by using the Online Inquiry Form below or calling the BC Cancer Screening Client Services Centre at 1-800-663-9203. ​

Health Gateway
​
Health Gateway is a free, secure online portal for BC residents aged 12 and older to access information in their personal health record. People can use Health Gateway on a phone, tablet or computer to view information, including lab results, immunizations and the following BC Cancer screening letters:
  • Screening reminders when it’s time to book a test (all screening programs).
  • Result letters for breast screening, cervix screening, colon screening (for screening completed using the FIT) and lung screening (selected normal or abnormal results).​

Can I see older screening letters? 

Only screening letters created on or after the date a person signs up for Health Gateway will appear in their account. Depending on when a person has signed up, digital copies of letters are available as far back as January 2024.

How do notifications work? 

Health Gateway sends email and/or text (SMS) notifications when a new screening letter that requires action is available in their account. The email and/or text (SMS) notification identifies which screening program has shared the letter and includes a link to log in to Health Gateway to view it. Emails and/or text (SMS) notifications are not sent for letters that do not require action, such as many normal results. 

Can I opt-out of getting notifications through Health Gateway?

Health Gateway users can change their preferences for email and/or text (SMS) notifications at any time by logging in, going to their profile and adjusting notification settings. Step-by-step instructions are available through the Health Gateway support guide.

Can I choose to get only digital or only mailed letters? 

There is currently no option to receive digital letters only. If you don’t want digital letters, simply don’t use Health Gateway. If you don’t want any letters (digital or mailed), you can opt out.

Anyone 12 years and older can use Health Gateway. Only you can access your account. To register, have your BC Services Card ready and gain access to Health Gateway here.

How is Health Gateway different from other digital tools? 

Health Gateway is the provincial patient portal that provides a consolidated view of your health records, including some BC Cancer screening letters. Some health authorities also offer their own digital tools. Using both gives you access to more of your health information in one place.

Privacy

BC Cancer Screening is a program of BC Cancer and a member agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority. The program collects personal information under the authority of the Health Act and 26 (c) and (e) of the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).

Your information may be used and shared as authorized by the related Acts. We may ask your health care provider or other organizations to provide us information about you (e.g. copies of records or test results or to confirm your identity and personal health number). In particular, your information may be used:
  • To identify you and communicate with you about your health care;
  • To provide you with health services;
  • To monitor the quality of our services and cancer screening trends in BC;
  • For education and training;
  • For research as permitted by FIPPA.
Your identity is never disclosed without your prior consent unless disclosure is required by law (e.g. court order, subpoena).

We take all reasonable steps to ensure that your personal health information is treated confidentially and stored securely. Our software partners are able to access data in our system for the purpose of troubleshooting technical errors. ‎

We use this information to:
  • Invite you to consider screening when you are age-eligible;
  • Remind you when you are due for your next screening test;
  • Inform you of your screening test results, including follow-up information (if required); and,
  • Collect feedback via surveys for the purposes of planning and evaluating BC Cancer screening programs.
