Who we are
BC Cancer – Kelowna (Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Centre) provides a full range of cancer care services for people in British Columbia. We work in partnership with Interior Health.
The centre is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Syilx/Okanagan People.
BC Cancer - Kelowna supports:
- 4 satellite sites
- 6 community sites
Together, these services support a regional population of about 750,000 people and help bring cancer care closer to home., serving a
BC Caqncer - Kelowna is a provincial leader in high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy for:
- Breast cancer
- Prostate cancer
- Gynecological cancers
BC Cancer - Kelowna ranks second in the province for clinical trial participation (accruals).
The cente includes:
- One of BC Cancer’s four PET/CT scanners
- A Varian Ethos machine that supports adaptive radiotherapy
When you work with BC Cancer – Kelowna, you gain access to advanced technology, research and specialized cancer care services.
Kelowna was the first site in Canada to install and treat patients using the Ethos treatment machine. This advanced technology supports adaptive radiotherapy in BC.
Radiation therapists can take on expanded roles in:
- Clinical trials
- Patient navigation
- Triage
These roles support team-based care and allow therpaists to work to their full scope of practice.
BC Cancer - Kelowna is the only cancer centre in the province that offers:
- Interstitial brachytherapy for gynecological cancers
- High dose rate brachytherapy (HDR BT) for breast and prostate cancers
BC also has its only research chair in brachytherapy at this centre, supporting advanced cancer research.
BC Cancer - Kelowna participates in the Canadian Cancer Clinical Trials Network’s Canadian Remote Access Framework for Clinical Trials (CRAFT). This programs helps bring clinical trials closer to patients' homes.
