When you receive care, treatment or services at BC Cancer, our staff and doctors collect your personal information.
When allowed, we may also ask your family, friends or other organizations to share information about you, suchas as medical records, medication details, or test results.
We may add your information to our electronic health system. This helps authorized care providers quickly find the key details they need, no matter where you receive care.
We collect, use and share your personal information under the BC Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA).
FIPPA and other laws allow us to use and share your information for these reasons:
- To identify you and contact you about your health care
- To provide ongoing care and support
- To plan, monitor and improve our services
- To support education and training (such as medical students) and research, with your consent or as allowed by law
- To confirm your eligibility for benefits and services and arrange billing
- To help organizations (such as the Ministry of Health and the Canadian Institute for Health Information) confirm your identity, plan services, measure performance and fund health care
- To track, manage and control disease outbreaks and monitor public health
- To meet legal requirements (such as court orders or reporting certain conditions
We share your health information with your referring doctor, other authorized health professionals and their teams, and health care organizations involved in your care. This helps ensure your care is consistent and continuous. In some cases, these providers may access your information through our electronic systems to support your care.
eHealth is a provincial system that lets authorized health care providers across BC access certain parts of your health information - not just within one region.
Each health authority sends selected information to a secure, province-wide system. We protect this information carefully and only use it for approved purposes.
