Ethics Service

The PHSA Ethics Service is free, confidential and easy to use. You do not need a referral. We support patients, families, health care providers, staff, administrators and leaders.

Our goals

We work to:

  • Build a strong culture of ethics across PHSA
  • Put patient values at the centre of health care decisions
  • Support Indigenous cultural safety and humility
  • Promote justice, equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Provide confidential support to patients and their loved ones
  • Improve care through open, fair and transparent decisions
  • Offer education and resources to support ethical practice
About ethics

You may face an ethical issue if you are asking questions like:

  • What is the right or fairest thing to do?
  • Which values matter most, and how do we balance them?
  • How do we move forward when people disagree?
  • How can I make care decisions that match my values or my loved one's values?
  • Who should make this decision or be involved?
Our services

We are committed to equity, diversity and inclusion. We provide all services using an equity- and trauma-informed approach:

  • Clinical ethics consults
We help patients, families and care teams work through ethical issues related to individual care
  • Organizational ethics consults
We support leaders and teams with system-level decisions, such as how to use resources use and reduce bias in health care
  • Public health ethics consults
We help public health partners develop ethical approaches to complex community health issues
  • Policy development and review
We work with teams to create and review policies for clinical care, public health, and operations
  • Ethics education
We build ethics skills across PHSA by offering tools, training and learning opportunities, both in person and online
  • Moral distress support
We help individuals and teams prevent and manage moral distress
