Do I need oncology experience?

​​No, you don’t need previous oncology experience to become part of the pharmacy team at BC Cancer! 

We’re committed to supporting your growth with specialized in-house training in key areas like sterile compounding, OPD and Chemo IV Clinical Trials, and drug access navigation. Whether you’re new to oncology or looking to expand your skills, we provide the tools and knowledge you need to succeed.

What are the qualifications to work as a Pharmacy Technician at BC Cancer?

​Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the College of Pharmacists of British Columbia. A registration number is required upon employee start date.

What skills and experience are needed to work as a Pharmacy Technician with BC Cancer?

​Our successful Pharmacy Technicians are good communicators – both in speaking and writing – with patients and their families, and other health care providers. Working in a team environment, Pharmacy Technicians are organized and have strong computer skills. And they're detailed: they know that checking all aspects of the medication distribution process will support the health, comfort, and care of people living with cancer.

What software application does BC Cancer use?

​BC Cancer uses up-to-date software applications, such as the hospital-wide CST Cerner system which integrates all areas of the hospital into one system. Within pharmacy, the PharmacyKeeper program helps to improve key pharmacy operational processes in meeting NAPRA sterile compound standards.

Do I need to deal with payments?

​BC Cancer pharmacies do not handle payments.

What does training and orientation look like?

​BC Cancer provides Pharmacy Technicians with 3 months of training and orientation.

Does BC Cancer take on students for their practicum?

Select centres may take 1-2 students for a 4-week hospital rotation. If you are interested in doing a rotation, please apply to PHSA’s HSPnet.

Is there a preference in what schools I graduated from?

​No. We do not prioritize one school over another. All accredited programs meet the required standards. If you have successfully completed your education, passed the necessary exams, and obtained your professional designation, you are qualified. We also consider other aspects of your application, such as references and relevant experience.

Does BC Cancer offer moving reimbursement?

​BC Cancer does offer moving reimbursement for eligible candidates. Please contact careers@bccancer.bc.ca to see if you are eligible.​

What career opportunities are there for Pharmacy Technicians at BC Cancer?

Pharmacy Technicians at BC Cancer have access to various specialized roles beyond traditional dispensing. 

Opportunities include:
  • Clinical Trials Support: Assisting with trial setup, managing investigational drug inventory, and contributing to policy and procedure development.
  • Data Management: Maintaining pharmacy systems, running statistics, and supporting platforms like PharmacyKeeper.
  • Supervisory Roles: Overseeing day-to-day operations or leading policy and standards development.
  • Provincial Certification Oversight: Ensuring compliance with chemotherapy mixing standards across the province.
  • Advanced Career Paths: Some technicians pursue additional training to become Data Managers within the Clinical Trials Unit.
While these roles are specialized and limited in number, upcoming redevelopment projects and retirements may create new opportunities for growth.

Every day, you’ll combine your clinical expertise with direct patient care and collaboration. You will:

  • Prepare and dispense medications and pharmaceuticals for oncology patients
  • Work directly with patients and care teams to plan, monitor, and optimize therapy

Training and specialization

You don’t need oncology experience to join BC Cancer — comprehensive on-the-job training is provided. Technicians gain expertise in areas such as:
  • Sterile compounding and chemotherapy preparation
  • Outpatient dispensary (OPD) and clinical trial support
  • Drug access navigation and patient medication assistance​
You’ll also have opportunities to move into advanced or specialized roles, including Pharmacy Technician Supervisor, Clinical Trial Technician, or Omni Cell Technician.

Your daily work

As a valued member of the pharmacy team, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring precision, safety, and compassionate care. Technicians at BC Cancer:
  • Perform final product checks for IV and oral oncology medications
  • Support clinical trial and restricted access medication programs
  • Maintain quality assurance standards for medication safety
  • Work in both ambulatory and acute care settings (depending on site)

Clinical trial opportunities

BC Cancer offers research opportunities, including the Genome Sciences Centre (Vancouver), Terry Fox Laboratories (Vancouver) and the Deeley Research Centre (Victoria).
  • Clinical Trials Technician – supporting the investigational drug program in maintaining best practice standards
  • Drug Access Navigation Technician – assisting patients in obtaining unfunded medications
  • Pharmacy Technician Supervisor – supporting pharmacy administration in overseeing the training, education, scheduling and daily workflow of the technicians
  • Oncology Certification Coordinator – overseeing compliance of safe handling and NAPRA standards
  • Informatics Technician – implementing, sustaining and refining pharmacy computer systems
