Volunteers are a valued and essential part of our care team. You help create a compassionate, respectful and inclusive environment for patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.

Whether you have been personally affected by cancer, are exploring a career in health care, or want to give back to your community, we welcome your application.

Important considerations

To support your well-being, please note the following:

  • If you are a current or former patient, please wait at least one year after completing active treatment before applying 
  • If you have lost a loved one to cancer, please also wait one year before applying

Eligibility criteria

To help ensure a safe and positive experience for everyone, volunteers must:

  • Be 18 years or older
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months, with a weekly shift on a consistent day
  • Be available Monday to Friday, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • Commit to shifts that range from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the role
  • Complete a criminal record check
  • Complete mandatory online orientation and training
  • Show a commitment to learning and applying cultural humility, including Indigenous Cultural Safety education

Volunteer positions

Welcome and wayfinding volunteer

As a welcome and wayfinding volunteer, you help create a warm and welcoming environment for patients, families and visitors. You  provide friendly assistance, help people find their way, escort patients to appointments, and share information about services and amenities at BC Cancer and nearby buildings.

Shift length: 3 hours
Shifts: Monday – Friday

  •  8 - 11 a.m.
  • 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • 2 – 4:30 p.m.

Chemotherapy volunteer support role

Chemotherapy volunteers support patients during treatment by offering emotional and practical support. Your presence helps reduce anxiety and improves the treatment experience.

Shift length: 3 hours
Shifts: Monday – Friday

  • 8 - 11 a.m.
  • 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • 2 – 4:30 p.m.

Pet therapy volunteer

Pet therapy volunteers support patients through visits with certified therapy dogs. This role is associated with an affiliated dog certification program.
