HPV Infection 5.1
In British Columbia, the Cervix Screening Program uses primary HPV testing with reflex cytology on provider collected specimens. Management of HPV-positive results is based on HPV type, cytology findings, and transformation zone assessment, following a risk-based algorithm. Individuals with HPV16 or 18, persistent hrHPV, or high-grade cytology, are referred directly to colposcopy. Those with low-grade or normal cytology may be monitored with repeat testing. If cytologic abnormalities persist or if a clinical lesion is noted on the cervix or upper vagina, colposcopic assessment is required.
