The BC Cancer Excellence Awards provide an opportunity to shine a light on the inspiring people and teams who help ensure that British Columbians receive world-class, patient-centred cancer screening, treatment and support, and benefit from new discoveries that are helping change the face of cancer.
Desmond Jay is a radiation therapist at BC Cancer – Vancouver. He is the winner of this year's BC Cancer Excellence Award in the category of Patient Care Champion, nominated by patients.
A Patient Care Champion is a staff member or physician who helps improve patients' experience, quality of life, quality of care and/or knowledge of the cancer system – either directly or indirectly. They show compassion, ingenuity and leadership, and act as a role model for others.
Radiation therapist Desmond Jay has been a guiding light for patients at BC Cancer, known for his empathy and professionalism in his role. His caring nature leaves a lasting impact on those he helps.
One patient shared, "I learned so much from Desmond in those 6+ weeks, he was my 'rock'. He remembered all my family and friends, answered any of their questions and always had a story to tell us. To this day, my family talks about Desmond like he is part of our family. I don't think my outcome would have been the same if I didn't have such an outstanding, supportive team. Desmond went above and beyond, the care I received was top notch and I am so appreciative of him and all the team that helped me get through this race."
Another patient, Gary Bourne, shared, "It was a pleasure to support such a worthy nominee and award winner. The team that supported me is comprised of people that you would easily enjoy inviting into your home. They gave their time and expertise; but mostly they gave of themselves. Perhaps somewhat ironically, they made a difficult personal health experience as pleasant as it could be."
Desmond's commitment to his patients and their families truly embodies the spirit of a Patient Care Champion. His dedication to providing exceptional care, and a sense of belonging and comfort, speaks volumes about his genuine compassion for cancer care.
