Volunteer with BC Cancer Vancouver

Volunteers are a valued and essential part of our interprofessional care team. You help create a compassionate, respectful, and inclusive environment for patients and their families throughout the cancer journey.
Information

Whether you have been personally affected by cancer, are pursuing a career in healthcare, or simply wish to give back to your community, we welcome your application.

Please note the considerations below to support your well-being:
  • If you are a current or former patient, we kindly ask that you wait at least one-year after completing active treatment before applying to volunteer.
     
  • If you have experienced the loss of a loved one to cancer, we also request that you wait one year before applying.

Eligibility Criteria

To help ensure a safe and supportive experience for all, successful applicants must:

  • Be 18+ years of age
  • Commit to a minimum of 6 months (weekly shift on a consistent day)
  • Be available Monday to Friday, between 8 AM - 4:30 PM
  • Length of shift will vary from 2 to 4 hours based on the program
  • Complete a criminal record check
  • Complete mandatory online orientation and training modules
  • Demonstrate a commitment to learning and applying principles of cultural humility, including Indigenous Cultural Safety education

Volunteer positions

Welcome & Wayfinding Volunteer

As a Welcome and Wayfinding Volunteer at BC Cancer, you will play a crucial role in creating a positive and welcoming environment for patients, families, and visitors. Your primary responsibilities will include providing friendly assistance, offering directional support, and escorting patients to their appointments. You will also help familiarize visitors with the amenities available within BC Cancer and nearby buildings.

Length of Shift: 3 Hours

Shifts: Monday – Friday, 8-11am, 11am – 2pm, 2 – 4:30pm


Chemotherapy Volunteer Support Role

The role of a Chemotherapy Volunteer is vital in enhancing the experience of patients undergoing treatment. You will play a crucial role in providing emotional and practical support to patients and their families during their chemotherapy treatments. Your presence can make a significant difference in their experience, helping to alleviate anxiety and discomfort.

Length of Shift: 3 Hours

Shifts: Monday – Friday, 8-11am, 11am – 2pm, 2 – 4:30pm


Pet Therapy Volunteer (Associated with affiliated dog certification program)

Flexibility with hours.
