Support services

Accommodation

Run by the Canadian Cancer Society, the Kordyban Lodge provides accommodation for cancer patients and their caregivers from Northern BC who need to travel for outpatient cancer care to Prince George. For more information, visit the Canadian Cancer Society website.

Indigenous cancer care support services

The Indigenous Cancer Care Counsellor (PDF) is available to assist patients and families from First Nations communities with emotional and practical concerns. The counsellor will make referrals to community agencies and assist patients and families when coping with cancer.

Indigenous Patient Navigator

An Indigenous patient navigator (IPN) works with the cancer care team to deliver supportive, trauma-informed and culturally safe care to Indigenous patients and their families. Patients who identify as Indigenous, First nations, Metis, Inuit, Status and Non-Status, can access IPN services.

Interpreter services

An interpreter may be booked for appointments. To request an interpreter, mention it to the clerk when they contact you to set up your first appointment.

Library

Pharmacy

The pharmacy is located on the ground floor of BC Cancer – Prince George (Centre for the North) and is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (excluding statutory holidays). To contact the pharmacy, call 250-645-7306 or toll-free (within BC) 1-855-775-7300 ext. 687306.

Sexual health and intimacy clinic

Cancer and treatment can cause many changes to your sexual health. Your sexual health is an important part of your overall health. A sexual health nurse is available to discuss your sexual health goals and create a plan to support your needs. Ask any member of your health care team to refer you or call the clinic at 250-645-7355. For more information, read our Sexual Health & Intimacy Clinic brochure.

Transportation

The Freemasons’ Volunteer Driver Program assists patients with transportation to and from cancer treatment. For more information call 250-645-2373.
Treatment services
Various specialized cancer treatment-related services are available at BC Cancer – Prince George:

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is the treatment that involves use of chemical agents (drugs) to stop cancer cells from growing. Chemotherapy can eliminate cancer cells at sites great distances from the original cancer. As a result, chemotherapy is considered a systemic treatment.

Palliative care/hospice support

Palliative care is specialized medical care for people with serious illnesses. This type of care is focused on providing patients with relief from symptoms, pain and stress. Palliative care is provided by a team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work with a patient’s other doctors to provide an extra layer of support. Psychiatry

Psychiatry is a key component of care, providing clinical psychiatric services for cancer patients. Psychiatrists at BC Cancer have a special interest and expertise in working with cancer patients and their illness experience, assisting them with psychological issues, symptom management, treatment crisis and rehabilitation issues.
