The new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre will bring much needed cancer services to one of the fastest growing regions in British Columbia. Targeted to open in 2030, the project is moving at incredible pace, with construction now above ground level and design development nearing the finish line.
Since breaking ground in 2023, the project has steadily progressed through critical phases including geotechnical testing, shoring, and excavation, leading in this important stage of above-ground construction.
Construction has reached Level 2 with concrete pillars and formwork now seen from the street. The north ramp is almost complete and work has started on the south ramp.
“Seeing construction rise above ground highlights the incredible progress we've made," said Cherie Taylor, executive director, Clinical Operations and Capital Development, BC Cancer. “The new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre will significantly enhance cancer services in one of B.C.'s fastest growing communities."

Since design development began with EllisDon in 2023, BC Cancer and Fraser Health project teams have worked tirelessly to design spaces to meet the health care needs of the future. The project has now reached the start of stage called “90 per cent design development", meaning that the design of the hospital and cancer centre is almost complete. As part of this stage, teams and subject matter experts were able to walk through the fully constructed mock-ups areas at the hospital and cancer centre site, providing valuable feedback and making the final design refinements to the spaces.

Reaching this stage reflects the hard work of the teams behind the project.
“I am incredibly proud of the dedication and teamwork behind this important project. The pace and quality of work on this project have been inspiring," said Robin Latondresse, senior executive director, Major Capital Projects, Provincial Health Services Authority. “This progress wouldn't be possible without the commitment of every team member, each playing a vital role in enhancing cancer care services in Surrey and beyond."
Partnering with Indigenous communities and patient partners has been an integral part in the design process. In early June, the project's Indigenous Working Group and the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) used virtual reality to walk through key areas, such as the Sacred Space, giving members an immersive preview of what the hospital and cancer centre will look like.
BC Cancer and Fraser Health have also been actively engaging with Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo artists through meet and greet sessions to explore opportunities for Indigenous artwork for the new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre.
“It has been a true privilege to collaborate with representatives from the Kwantlen, Katzie, and Semiahmoo First Nations throughout the design process. Their meaningful engagement and guidance have been instrumental in ensuring that the new hospital and cancer centre reflects their culture, stories, values, and deep connection to the land," said Rosy Hartman, manager, Indigenous design and cultural safety, BC Cancer.
The new Surrey hospital and BC Cancer Centre is targeted to open in 2030.
BC Cancer is also building new cancer centres in Burnaby, Nanaimo, and Kamloops. The cancer centres are part of BC's 10-Year Cancer Action Plan, which outlines immediate steps to prevent, detect and treat cancers, delivering improved care for people facing cancer now while preparing for the growing needs of the future.
