Patient Care Champion, patient nominated
Robbie KhunKhun & David Ling
Clerk & licesnsed practical nurse
BC Cancer - Surrey
“I was shaking so much I could barely speak. Robbie was one of the people at the check in desk who spotted me and the trouble I was in and got up from his desk to help me. He was perceptive, intuitive and had that soothing touch. We sat down together. Robbie listened to my concerns and wrote down the ways in which I could get some immediate help for my fragile condition. I felt as though he had just saved my life. I returned to the cancer clinic for my first radiation treatment. David Ling was there and immediately responded to my need for help, and walked me to the radiation check-in desk and stayed with me until I was sure I was in the right place. Later I thought how lucky I was to run into these to amazing people when I desperately needed support and how fortunate the Surrey cancer centre is to have them as employees."

Unsung Hero, direct patient care
Caitlin Patton
Clinical nurse leader
BC Cancer - Vancouver
“Caitlin recognizes the importance of highlighting the hard work, compassion, and dedication of the nurses she leads. She consistently checks in on nurses following challenging events, such as a code blue or a difficult assignment. Caitlin also implemented a 'shout-outs' box, where both patients and staff can recognize the nurses on the unit. This simple, yet-effective strategy has contributed towards improved morale on the unit. The shout-outs are read daily during huddle, allowing nurses to cheer on and celebrate their colleagues."

“The work of this team and its members truly centers person-centered care and focuses on amplifying voices who can be underserved by the health system and often under-engaged in health system planning and improvement. They have created a framework for adaptive, flexible engagement and co-development work with persons with lived and living experience of health and social inequities, prioritizing relationship building, reciprocity, flexibility, and trust in activity co-creation, collaborative planning and delivery. In doing so, the team deconstructed power differentials and amplified patient voices who often face racism, discrimination and exclusion in the health system."
